estimates for 1950. It is only proposed next year to build

four miles of this road from Kowloon City to the village of

Ma-yau-tong in the gap overlooking the harbour between

Custour Pass and yamun. The object of this section of the

road is to open up a hill district for the Yarloon Peninsula

similar to that on Hong Kong island.

It is, of course, very desirable that tie

Grace of the whole road should be permanently marked out, in

order that the work already done by the engineers of the

Public Works Department, in connection with this scheme, may

not be thrown away; but, in view of the reluctance of all

unofficial members of the legislative Council, save one, to

pass this vote at the present time, I have no thought it

desirable to press for tie adoption of item No.7% by means

of the official vote in Legislative Council.

I have the honour to be,

My Lord,

Your Lordship's most obedient,

hurable servant,

(Sd.) C. CLEMEN' I,

Governor, &c.
